Fix the login loop in Xubuntu 24.04

 I had some problems logging into my brand new Xubuntu 24.04 LTS install running on Virtualbox.

On the first login, I was booted back to the login screen. Opening some apps would also throw me out of the GUI session to the login screen. Eventually, I got into a loop where I get continually thrown into a login screen.

This bug is mentioned on the Xubuntu homepage as a known issue:

Xorg crashes and the user is logged out after logging in or switching users on some virtual machines

 Seems that this bug also affects Ubuntu 24.04.

To get a terminal from the login screen, I pressed Ctrl-Alt-F1 and logged in. To get back to the GUI login, you can press Ctrl-Alt-F7.

To fix the problem, I had to remove libva-wayland2:

sudo apt remove libva-wayland2 

After this, login is possible again in GUI mode (Ctrl-Alt-F7).

However, this also uninstalled some apps I wanted.

Looks like I have to skip Xubuntu 24.04 or Ubuntu 24.04 for now until this is fixed.

How to fix the weird audio bug in Kingdom Come: Deliverance

  Kingdom Come: Deliverance has a bug which makes the sound come out muffled or like the characters were talking far away or through a tunnel. This seems to be because the game thinks you are using multichannel surround sound. There seems to be no option to change the audio mode in-game. Instead, you should change your audio settings in Windows by following these directions: Press the windows key Type "Choose your output device" and select the search result. Select "Device properties" under the Output caption. Select "Additional device properties" This dialog will differ depending on your audio hardware. Go to the Advanced tab. There should be a selection for the default audio format. You should select something like this: 2 channel 44100 Hz audio. I had my Focusrite audio interface set up with 8 channels 24bit 44100 Hz, and that caused Kingdom Come to think I have surround sound. After changing the channel amount to 2 the audio started working correctly.

Minimizing a linux virtual disk image with zerofree

How to make your linux drive image smaller with zerofree and virtualbox-manage First you need to write zeroes on top of old unallocated data (the files you have deleted) on the virtual drive. This is done with zerofree. zerofree will only overwrite unallocated data so the Virtualbox drive image file will not get any bigger than it already is. Then we use vboxmanage to compact the virtual disk image. Note that this will not work if you are using an encrypted hard disk. This is because the zeroes written by zerofree will be encrypted. How to fix the Anno 1404 out of memory error

While playing Anno 1404 Venice multiplayer in local LAN , I had some crashes on one of the PCs. The game suddenly shows a message saying "You no longer have enough memory" and then crashes after a while. I found several tips on the internet on how to solve this. Upgrading Ubuntu 10.04 to 11.10.

Due to the Kernel of my current Ubuntu Linux being incompatible with the new squashfs, I wanted to update my Ubuntu desktop to the newest version, 11.10. The old version I was using was 10.04 LTS (long-term support). The process had to be done in three parts, and took a quite long time (~3 hours). If you have a slow internet it could take much more. How to get rid of coil whine just by tweaking BIOS

Finally. No more ringing in my ears! I had a really bad case of coil whine with my computer. In the end I fixed it just by tweaking the BIOS! The coil whine was at it's worst when the PC was idling or under a light load.  Coil whine is a high-pitched sound that is produced by coils resonating at a high frequency.
