How to install and play Curse of Monkey Island on Android

There are some great adventure games on Android already. I can warmly recommend Thimbleweed Park or The Silent Age for example. But what if you wanted to play an old classic that cannot be found on Google Play?

ScummVM is an app that can emulate these games, if you have the data files.

And Curse of Monkey Island is one of these classics.

Installation

Now you can start enjoying Curse of Monkey Island!

These instructions should also work on an iPhone.

Controls

The game is originally controlled by mouse. Here is what you need to know about controlling the game on an Android phone:

Simply tap on the screen to emulate a left-click. This will move Guybrush around.

To access the inventory, you need a right-click, which is done by pressing one finger and tapping another finger on screen.

And in order for Guybrush to access the "verb wheel" and do something, you need to left-click and drag in the original. On Android, you need to tap and quickly tap again, but leave your finger on the screen on the second time. Then drag the cursor to the action you want and release.

Admittedly, the controls are not the best, but they work and I eventually got used to them.

Because of the controls being what they are, the ship combat parts of the game might get harder than usual. So when you get the choice to select the difficulty for the ship battles, I recommend choosing the "easy mode".

The game is also not designed for a phone screen. This makes pixel hunting a bit harder. If you run into a room with seemingly nothing to do, check it carefully. There might be a nail on the wall!

These tips should be enough to finish the game, but here are the rest of ScummVM controls on Android in case you need them.

On iPhones, the controls are a bit different.

Note on Monkey Island 1 and 2

You can also do this with Monkey Island 1 and 2, and in fact, some years ago I replayed Monkey Island 1 on my Android phone. But since the release of the Special edition versions, the original game data files are no longer available just like that. If you have the original versions, they will work. And on this page you can find some instructions on how to extract the original data files from the SE versions.

Have fun!
